Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to help one of our loyal customers in Forest Hills, TN design and install a very elegant choice of drapery in her primary bedroom. When we first met with the customer, the goal was clear: to enhance the home’s interior with custom drapery. Our customer, who appreciates high-end, customizable solutions, was eager to explore her options. The initial consultation was comprehensive, allowing the homeowner to dive deep into fabric choices, colors, and styles.
Layering Roman Shades with Drapery
The homeowner already had Roman shades that we had previously designed and installed in several rooms and wanted to layer them with drapery in her primary bedroom. The decision to layer these roman shades with drapery was driven by both aesthetic and functional reasons. Roman shades offer a sleek, tailored look and provide excellent light control. However, layering them with drapery adds an extra dimension of elegance and sophistication to the space. The drapery not only enhances the visual appeal but also offers additional benefits like improved insulation and enhanced privacy.
Layering light-filtering roman shades with blackout curtains gives the customer full control over the natural light through the day.
Drapery Selection and Installation
Drapes offer a dramatic effect, especially in spaces with tall ceilings or large windows. They add softness and texture, making rooms feel more expansive and inviting. Our client appreciated the ability to wake up with sunlight, thanks to light-filtering shades complemented by blackout drapes for optimal light control.
The customer’s vision was to have floor-to-ceiling drapes covering their large primary bedroom windows.
The customization process is key to achieving the perfect look. We presented various fabric options, ranging from light, airy sheers to rich, heavy velvets. Each fabric has unique qualities that contribute to the room’s ambiance.
We also discussed pleat styles, an important aspect of drapery design. This customer went with the more traditional look of pinch pleats for her curtains. Pinch pleats are popular for their formal, tailored look, while other styles like cartridge pleats offer a more relaxed, contemporary feel. These choices significantly influence the drapery’s overall appearance and how it fits into the room’s design.
Pinch pleats give the drapes the more formal look that the customer was looking to achieve.
Precision is crucial in drapery installations. We meticulously measured every dimension, from floor to ceiling, and noted architectural features that could affect the installation. For instance, the home had a trim piece near the ceiling that required special consideration to ensure secure mounting of the hardware.

Installing drapery is a meticulous process that involves careful selection, precise measurement, and skilled installation. The result is a stunning transformation that enhances the room’s aesthetic and functionality. Whether for a formal dining room, a cozy living space, or a serene master bedroom, custom drapery provides an elevated, tailored look that standard treatments cannot match.

The drapery and roman shades installation process we completed for this customer demonstrates the profound impact of these window treatments. By focusing on customization, precision, and quality, we created a home environment that is not only visually appealing but also comfortable and functional. Layering roman shades with drapery added depth and sophistication, showcasing the versatility and elegance of combining these two types of window treatments.
